The World’s Greatest Unknown Guitarist

Legends of Rock Guitar; by Pete Brown and H.P. Newquist (Hal Leonard Books)

This absolutely killer guitar solo was recorded in 1981 from the soundboard by the astonished house engineer. He had no idea who the guitarist was. He first heard the band during soundcheck and made sure to record the evening’s performance. The recording is of the group’s fourth gig together. Audio cassettes of this Berkeley, California show were boot-legged and passed around via the underground for years. In 1995, the tape was finally released on CD as “The Humbler”. (Good luck finding this CD.) Be prepared to be blown away by the late, great Danny Gatton. It is a sad fact of life. Great talent alone does not guarantee fame and fortune. Danny and Roy Buchanan both have been labeled “The World’s Greatest Unknown Guitarist”. Other comparisons can also be made. They both played Telecasters. They both lived, performed, and were friends in the Washington, D.C. area. They both took their own lives.

Phil Carson has written a great biography, “Roy Buchanan: American Axe”.
